Submarine geomorphology of a glaciated active margin, British Columbia, Canada
Geomorphic diversity of the Newfoundland and Labrador Shelves Bioregion
Abstract Douglas Channel is a 140 km-long fjord system on Canada's west coast where steep topography, high annual precipitation and glacially over-deepened bathymetry have resulted in widespread slope failures. A 5 year project involving numerous marine expeditions to the remote area produced a comprehensive assessment of the magnitude and frequency of slope failures in the region. A classification scheme is presented based on morphology and failure mechanism: (1) debris flows are the most common in all parts of the fjord – they are often small with a subaerial component where fjord wall slope is very high or tend to exceed volumes of 10 6 m 3 where fjord wall slope is lower, allowing for accumulation of marine sediments; (2) large failures of oversteepened glacial sediments occurring at transgressive moraines and glaciomarine plateaus following deglaciation – the largest is at Squally Channel with an estimated volume of 10 9 m 3 ; (3) fjord wall failures that involve bedrock slump or rock avalanche; (4) translation of marine sediments; (5) composite/other slides; and (6) two scallop-shaped sackungen, or deep-seated gravitational slope deformations of granodiorite with volumes exceeding 60 × 10 6 m 3 . The postglacial marine sedimentary record shows evidence of large-scale slope failures of all styles that were especially active following deglaciation. The Holocene marks a transition to a lower frequency and change to primarily debris flows and smaller rock slides. Slope failures that may be capable of generating tsunamis and may be damaging to coastal infrastructure have occurred in all parts of Douglas Channel through much of the Holocene. Here we present a morphological analysis with volume estimates and age control using multibeam bathymetry, high-resolution sub-bottom data and sediment cores. The study details an extensive analysis of slope failures in a fjord network that can be extended to other fjord environments.
Providing multidisciplinary scientific advice for coastal planning in Kitimat Arm, British Columbia
Abstract A 6.3 m tsunami swept through Kitimat Arm, British Columbia in 1974. An even larger wave struck and damaged the Northlands Navigation dock at Kitimat and the Haisla First Nation docks at Kitamaat Village the following year. Further down the fjord, two large coastal block failures were observed on the fjord walls across from the Gitga'at village of Hartley Bay. Several large infrastructure projects have recently been proposed for the Kitimat Arm coastal areas. The Geological Survey of Canada has therefore embarked on a five-year project to understand the magnitude and frequency of submarine mass movements in this fjord system to provide information regarding the risks from these events and to propose mitigation measures that may reduce these risks. We provide here an overview and the main results to date of an ongoing multidisciplinary study, which includes palaeotsunami studies, geomorphological and sub-seabed mapping, subaerial landslide hazard assessment, tsunami modelling, in situ and laboratory geotechnical testing, and the real-time tracking of seismic activity and seafloor movement. Some of these activities are reported in greater detail elsewhere in this book. The results of this research are summarized as a list of conclusions and recommendations to the Government of Canada.

Continental shelves of Atlantic Canada
Abstract The wide continental shelves of Atlantic Canada are characterized by a series of banks separated by transverse troughs. These shelves have been imprinted by repeated Quaternary glaciations, so that fluvial valleys have been deepened into fjords and shelf-crossing troughs, and a suite of glacigenic sediments has been deposited. In shallow areas the seafloor is shaped by waves and currents, including the strong tidal currents of the macrotidal Bay of Fundy. Glacigenic sediments have been reworked by modern processes to yield thick muds in basins, and thinner deposits of sand and gravel on wave-dominated banks and the littoral zone. As a result of a cold climate and the Labrador Current, seasonal sea ice occurs to varying degrees across the region, and iceberg impact continues on much of the Newfoundland and Labrador shelves. For the purpose of description, we divide Atlantic continental shelves into four regions and focus on advances in understanding over the past several decades relating to: (1) processes on upper continental slopes; (2) glacial history in the last glacial cycle; (3) glacial land systems; (4) geographical changes caused by glacio-isostasy; and (5) sediment mobility on the offshore banks. We conclude with a brief overview of the biota.
