This bibliography and accompanying index supplements and brings up to date through December, 1968, Stuart Weller’s indispensible Bibliographic Index of North American Carboniferous Invertebrates (U.S. Geol. Surv., Bull. 153, 1898). Weller’s bibliography includes most pertinent literature through 1897 and is duplicated in part by Charles Schuchert’s Synopsis of American Fossil Brachiopoda (U.S. Geol. Surv., Bull. 87, 1897). The reader is referred to these two works for reference to the early literature pertaining to North American Carboniferous brachiopods. The following text consists of two parts. The first is a bibliography, and the second an alphabetically arranged index of the species with the citations in chronological order. It is our intention that all generic appellations for a particular species name be referred back to the original designation, e.g., all references to Productus burlingtonensis (Hall), Dictyoclostus burlingtonensis (Hall), and Marginatia burlingtonensis (Hall), etc., are referred to Productus flemingi var. burlingtonensis (Hall, 1858), the original designation. We believe that this method of indexing facilitates locating species because the index user need not know either the original or the most recent generic name applied to a species. Following Weller’s example, we have not included species citations not accompanied by descriptions and/or illustrations. Mere mention of species names or their inclusion in faunal lists does not, in our opinion, warrant incorporation in the present index. For purposes of objectivity, we have made no effort to establish systematically accurate (but subjective) synonymies and assume that the specialist will concern himself with this task. With a few exceptions, . . .
