Abstract Two stops (Fig. 1) southwest of the town of Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina (Fig. 1). No special permission is needed for either stop. Site 1 is a quarry located in the southwestern corner of the Concord 7½-minute Quadrangle, and is accessible via Cavalier Court, an unpaved road connecting with Rock Hill Church Road (Rd. 1414) 0.2 mi (0.3 km) northwest of its intersection with U.S. 29. Cars and vans can be parked at the quarry (0.4 mi or 0.6 km down Cavalier Court), but buses should be parked near the radio tower. Site 2 is an exposure along Coddle Creek at Weddington Road in the Kannapolis quadrangle. A bridge crosses the creek 0.2 mi (0.3 km) southwest of the Weddington Road (Rd. 1431) and Concord Farms Road (Rd. 1432) intersection. Park at the turnout on the south side of thbridge, cross the fence on the opposite side of the road, and walk upstream on the right side of the creek for approximately 300 ft (90 m) to a small waterfall. The outcrop is a field of large gabbro boulders and is not visible from the road.
Winding Stair Gap granulates: The thermal peak of Paleozoic metamorphism Available to Purchase
Abstract The Winding Stair Gap exposure is a l,220-ft-(370 m) long road cut on U.S. 64 in Macon County, North Carolina. The outcrop is located in the northeastern part of the Rainbow Springs 7½-minute Quadrangle within the Nantahala National Forest, 10.5 mi (17.5 km) south of the U.S. 64 South and U.S. 441 intersection near Franklin, North Carolina (Fig. 1). Paved parking areas suitable for buses are available at the crest of Winding Stair Gap adjacent to the Appalachian Trail, and just north of the exposure at a scenic overlook. Access to the upper tiers (for specimen collecting) is via the northern end of the outcrop.
