Abstract

Detailed analysis of outcrops along Hay River and 18 cores from the surrounding area shows that the Upper Devonian (Frasnian) strata of the Hay River area, previously assigned to the Hay River Formation, can be divided into the Waterways, Muskwa, Fort Simpson, and Escarpment formations. The Fort Simpson Formation is divided into units 1, 2, 3, and 4 whereas the Escarpment Formation is divided into members A, B, C, D, and E. In the reference section from drill hole HW-79-9, the Waterways Formation is 8.8 m thick, the Muskwa Formation is 3.3 m thick, the Fort Simpson Formation is 253.2 m thick, and the Escarpment Formation is 105.8 m thick. Interbedded argillaceous limestones and calcareous shales of the Waterways Formation disconformably overlie the shallow water, platform limestones of the Slave Point Formation. The disconformable surface is represented by a hardground, which formed only on topographic highs on the surface of the Slave Point Formation. Black bituminous shales of the Muskwa Formation overlie the Waterways Formation. Locally, where the shales of the Waterways Formation were not deposited, the Muskwa Formation rests directly on the Slave Point Formation. The Muskwa Formation is overlain by a thick succession of calcareous shale with some limestone and carbonate-siliciclastic interbeds of the Fort Simpson Formation. The overlying Escarpment Formation is formed of interbedded shale, fossiliferous limestone and carbonate-siliciclastics. Strata of the Waterways Formation and units 1 to 3 of the Fort Simpson Formation were deposited during a transgression, whereas unit 4 of the Fort Simpson Formation and the Escarpment Formation were deposited during a regression.
