Abstract
In 1978 the Northern Rockies experienced a 4.8% increase in total wells drilled compared to 1977. Development of many new discoveries and the search for new reserves of natural gas pushed the number of wells drilled to 2,433 in 1978 compared with 2,322 in 1977. Exploratory success decreased from 23.7 to 18.6%. At year end, activity began to decrease owing to harsh weather and unsettled legislation for oil and gas pricing.
