Abstract

Activity in the Texas Panhandle surpassed the peak reached in 1954. The number of exploratory wells increased from 87 in 1954 to 98 in 1955. Of these, 31 were productive of oil or gas. Contrary to last year, the Oklahoma Panhandle also increased in exploratory activity during 1955. There were 63 exploratory tests drilled as compared with 40 in 1954. Of these, 25 were productive of oil or gas. Development wells in the Texas Panhandle totaled 1,053 and were more than 95% successful. In the Oklahoma Panhandle 122 development wells were drilled with a success ratio of 88%. Oil and gas production increased in the Texas Panhandle as compared with 1954 with a significant part of the increase coming from newly discovered pre-Permian reservoirs. The number of seismograph crew weeks increased sharply during 1955, but gravity crew-weeks decreased from 1954. There was a vast increase in the number of stratigraphic tests drilled. Leasing activity remained approximately the same as in 1954.
