Abstract

In Germany there are three different oil provinces, namely, the North German, the Rhenish, and the Subalpine. A geological summary of these provinces is given. The different oil fields are described as to the stratigraphy and structure. An explanation is given of the origin of the oil in the different provinces. It originated at various ages but under the same facies and paleogeographic conditions. The development of the German oil industry, the output of the different fields, the properties of the oil, the production methods, and petroleum laws are indicated. Since 1920 the German oil production has steadily increased. Nearly all oil at present produced in Germany comes from the North German oil province, where it is found in the vicinity of salt domes under conditions similar to those in the Gulf coastal plain of the United States.
