Abstract
X-ray and magnetic properties of a highly magnetic mineral found in abundance at the top of a core from the central Indian Ocean indicate that it is mainly maghemite with some magnetite. A residual or detrital origin is rejected; several possibilities for authigenic formation in place, as well as by direct precipitation, are considered.
