Abstract

Soap stone occurs in Finland in Pre-Cambrian greenstone belts. Deposits Nunnanlahti and others near the Pileinen Lake are the most known and important ones. This soft stone is a highly workable material for a sculptor's chisel. It was one of the most popular ornamental rocks used in architecture of the Art Nouveau styles in St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Turku, Tampere and other North European cities around 1900. Examples are given and discussed.
