Tectonics, bathymetry, and geomagnetism of the southern continental borderland west of Baja California, Mexico

Abstract

Structural features revealed in this submarine province of basins and ridges include seismically active northwest- and west-southwest-trending fault zones associated with the continental Agua Blanca fault and also seismically inactive east-west fault zones and faults along the seaward margin of the borderland. Large strike-slip components are observed in addition to obvious dip-slip components. Large geomagnetic anomalies are associated with the present coast line and linear anomalies trend north-south in the deep-sea crust. Increasing heat flow to the east weakens crustal strength and explains the severe borderland deformation relative to the oceanic crust.
