Barchan-dune movement in Imperial Valley, California
Geological Society of America Bulletin (1964) 75 (2): 149-156

Abstract

Movement of barchan-dunes on the west side of the Salton Sea in Imperial Valley between 1956 and 1963 averaged 82 feet per year. During the previous fifteen-year period, some of the dunes moved only 50 feet per year; the difference is attributed to increasing sand supply in recrecent years. Rate of movement is affected by both the height and shape of the dune.--M.C
