Abstract

The Pardos deposit consists of a system of Cu-Ag veins located 185 km southwest of Zaragoza, Spain, in the western (Castilian) branch of the Iberian Range, within one of the scattered massifs or inliers of Ordovician and Silurian rocks. The ore assemblage and textures at the Pardos deposit reflect vertical zoning: the lower level (La Estrella mine), contains tetrahedrite isotypic series minerals (TISM), famatinite-luzonite series minerals, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and minor galena and sphalerite, whereas the upper level (Majadillas mine), shows an "epithermal association" composed by tetrahedrite, Ag-rich tetrahedrite, freibergite, pyrargyrite, stephanite, polybasite and acanthite. Textural and compositional lines of evidence suggest the dissolution of tetrahedrite and reprecipitation of Ag-rich sulfosalts promoted by supergene enrichment with a remobilization of Ag. The occurrence of sharp interfaces between the parent mineral and the secondary phases, the structural collapse of the tetrahedrite cores by dissolution, and the development of porosity and numerous fine cracks within the grains are consistent with coupled dissolution-and-reprecipitation reactions.
