Abstract

Time shifts on 4D seismic images result from two basic causes: (1) acoustic velocity changes due to fluid migration, fluid substitution, fluid composition; and (2) velocity changes resulting from changes in total stresses (i.e., the vertical and horizontal stresses) during depletion. This paper is concerned only with the latter--the effect of changing total stress on rock velocity.
