Abstract

The high-field magnetization (up to 14.5 T) and magnetic susceptibility for two samples (white and green) of Burmese (now Myanmar) jadeite, containing transition metal ions, has been studied over the temperature range 1.7-420 K. It appears that the high-temperature susceptibility data obey the Curie-Weiss law indicating the onset of antiferromagnetic interaction between the magnetic ions. This interaction is also seen in the high-field magnetization data which are well described by the phenomenological cluster model. As a result, the Fe (super 3+ ) ion is identified as dominant in these jadeites with a molar concentration of 0.8 % in white and 2.5 % in green jadeite; the diamagnetic susceptibility of the jadeite matrix is -3.8 x 10 (super -7) emu/g.
