Abstract

The crystal structures of Ca (sub 2) (Fe (sub 0.933) Al (sub 0.067) ) (sub 2) O (sub 5) and Ca (sub 2) (Fe (sub 0.722) Ga (sub 0.278) ) (sub 2) O (sub 5) have been determined from single crystals grown from a CaCl (sub 2) flux. Both are isostructural with Ca (sub 2) Fe (sub 2) O (sub 5) and belong to space group Pnma. Their cell dimensions are a 5.420, b 14.743, c 5.597 Aa and a 5.420, b 14.721, c 5.599 Aa, respectively. The Al (super 3+) in the first doped compound occupy the tetrahedral 4(c) site of Pnma exclusively, and in the Ga-doped specimen the Ga (super 3+) ions preferentially reside on the tetrahedral positions with a significant amount of approximately 23% of the total Ga in the octahedrally coordinated 4(a) site.
