A structural, infrared, and Moessbauer spectral study of rosemaryite, NaMnFe (super 3+) Al(PO (sub 4) ) (sub 3)

Abstract

A single-crystal study of rosemaryite from the Buranga pegmatite, Rwanda, with a 12.001, b 12.396, c 6.329 Aa, beta 114.48 degrees , V 856.9 Aa (super 3) , Z = 4, space group P2 (sub 1) /n, was refined to R 4.01 %. The structure and cation distribution are similar to those of ferrorosemaryite and qinghuiite, Na (sub 2) Fe (super 2+) (sub 2) Al(PO (sub 4) ) (sub 3) , but Al mainly occurs in the M(2a) site, not in M(2b) as observed in ferrowyllieite , Na (sub 2) Fe (super 2+) (sub 2) Al(PO (sub 4) ) (sub 3) . The [7+1]-coordinated X(2) site is a very distorted gable disphenoid. Moessbauer spectra have been obtained from 4.2 to 295 K, and fitted with a model including two Fe (super 3+) and two Fe (super 3+) doublets. The Fe (super 2+) component corresponding with 2/3 of the Fe (super 2+) spectral area and having a smaller quadrupole splitting of 2.63 mm/s at 15 K is assigned to the Fe (super 2+) on the M(2a) site, and the Fe (super 2+) component with the larger quadrupole splitting of 3.37 mm/s is assigned to the Fe (super 2+) on the M(1) site. Fe (super 3+ ) is located only at the M(2a) and M(2b) sites. The IR spectrum is presented.
