The interdiffusion of (Fe,Mn)-Mg along the [001] axis in single crystals of natural diopside at ambient pressure, at temperatures between 1000 and 1300 degrees C, and at f(O (sub 2) ) between 10 (super -18.5) to 10 (super -6) atm was investigated. Thin layers ( approximately 350-550 Aa) of ferro-johannsenite deposited by plasma sputtering provided Fe and Mn for exchange with Mg from the diopside substrates. The interdiffusion profiles of Fe-Mg and Mn-Mg were analysed by SIMS in depth profiling mode. The (Fe,Mn)-Mg interdiffusion coefficient is strongly pO (sub 2) sensitive. At 1100 degrees C and between 10 (super -7 ) to 10 (super -15 ) atm the interdiffusion coefficient is proportional to approximately (pO (sub 2) ) (super m) indicative of an extrinsic point defects regime. A value of m of 0.22 + or - 0.02 as obtained, indicating a vacancy mechanism.
