Abstract

Hyalophane occurs with albite and microcline in a very low grade (anchizone to epizone) metasedimentary association from the Uppony Mts., Hungary, and in Grenville marbles, Ontario. Numerous EPMA results are tabulated and show very little Ba in albite and only limited Na in hyalophane. A marble from the garnet zone has albite (Ab (sub 95-98) ), oligoclase (An (sub 17) Sl[slawsonite] (sub 3) Ab (sub 80) ), hyalophane (Cn (sub 65) Sl (sub 3) An (sub 2) Ab (sub 9) Or (sub 24) ) and celsian (Cn (sub 92) Sl (sub 3) An (sub 1) Ab (sub 2) Or (sub 2) ); the albite and oligoclase are intergrown and may indicate unmixing during cooling. Sanidine from the Peshtigo monzonite, Wisconsin, unmixed to a symplectic perthite with barian microcline (Cn (sub 8-11) An (sub 2) Ab (sub 8-13) Or (sub 75-80) ) and oligoclase (Cn (sub 1) An (sub 18) Ab (sub 79) Or (sub 2) ). The former compositions of the ternary igneous feldspars (Cn (sub 3) An (sub 9) Ab (sub 46) Or (sub 42) , Cn (sub 1) An (sub 18) Ab (sub 69) Or (sub 12) ) were obtained by reintregration. The Na content of hyalophane equilibrated with albite is correlated with metamorphic grade. Hyalophane has 5 + or - 2 mol% Ab in very low grade associations, 10 + or - 3 mol% Ab in the greenschist facies, 16 + or - 2 mol% Ab in the low to middle amphibolite facies and 30 mol% Ab in the upper amphibolite to granulite facies even when not buffered by albite. The limited Na content of celsian equilibrated with albite in the greenschist facies is in striking disagreement with the narrow solvi obtained from unreversed experiments on the join BaAl (sub 2) Si (sub 2) O (sub 8) -NaAlSi (sub 3) O (sub 8) . Up to eight four-feldspar and 24 three-feldspar assemblages may be stable in the system BaAl (sub 2) Si (sub 2) O (sub 8) -CaAl (sub 2) Si (sub 2) O (sub 8) -NaAlSi (sub 3) O (sub 8) -KAlSi (sub 3) O (sub 8) . Given its miscibility gaps with microcline and celsian, the name hyalohane is justified for intermediate feldspars near the Cn-Or join.
