Abstract

Exploratory borings traversing the Tertiary and Quaternary limestones of Eniwetok encountered olivine basalt underlying shallow-water Eocene limestones at depths of over 4,000 feet. The boring data demonstrate that the atoll developed on the summit of a basaltic volcano rising two miles above the ocean floor.
