Origin and classification of submarine canyons
Bulletin of the Geological Society of America (1953) 64 (11): 1295-1314

Abstract

Distinguishes two principal types of submarine canyons--ravines which represent drowned valleys, and canyons excavated in the sediments of the continental slope by the action of turbidity currents during the glacial lowering of sea level. Examples of these and of transitional types are cited, mainly from North American localities.
