Abstract

Vaestmanlandite-(Ce) occurs at Malmkaerra, Norberg district, Sweden, as anhedral grains, 2-3 mm across, associated with fluorbritholite-(Ce), tremolite, a serpentine mineral, magnetite, dollaseite-(Ce) and dolomite, in a Bastnaes-type skarn deposit. It is allanite-like in appearance; dark brown, translucent, with a vitreous lustre; good {001} cleavage, D (sub calc) 4.51 g/cm (super 3) , H. approximately 6; alpha 1.781, beta 1.792, gamma 1.810, 2Valpha 75 degrees . EPMA gave SiO (sub 2) 26.61, TiO (sub 2) 0.04, P (sub 2) O (sub 5) 0.05, Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) 8.58, Fe (sub 2) O (sub 3) 2.69, FeO 1.14, MgO 5.51, CaO 4.65, La (sub 2) O (sub 3) 13.65, Ce (sub 2) O (sub 3) 23.90, Pr (sub 2) O (sub 3) 2.07, Nd (sub 2) O (sub 3) 6.28, Sm (sub 2) O (sub 3) 0.42, Gd (sub 2) O (sub 3) 0.15, Y (sub 2) O (sub 3) 0.18, F 1.06, H (sub 2) O (sub calc) 1.61, less O=F 0.45, = 98.14, leading to the ideal formula Ce (sub 3) CaAl (sub 2) AlMg[Si (sub 2) O (sub 7) ][SiO (sub 4) ] (sub 3) O(OH) (sub 2) . Indexed XRD powder data are tabulated; strongest lines 2.983(100), 3.50(20), 2.625(19), 15.81(16), 2.187(15) Aa; a 8.939, b 5.706, c 15.855 Aa, beta 94.58 degrees , V 804 Aa (super 3) , Z = 2, space group P2 (sub 1) /m. The crystal structure was refined to R 1.73%; vaestmanlandite-(Ce) is nearly isotypic to gatelite-(Ce) and can be described as a regular dollaseite-(Ce)-toernebohmite-(Ce) polysome. The name is for the area of Sweden.
