Abstract

The crystal structure of uzonite from the Uzon caldera, Kamchatka, Russia, has been refined in space group P2 (sub 1) /m to R 2.66 % (a 7.973, b 8.096, c 7.148 Aa, beta 101.01 degrees , V 452.9 Aa (super 3) , Z = 2). The structure consists of discrete covalently bonded As (sub 4) S (sub 5) molecules held together by van der Waals forces. Both the intramolecular As-S (2.237-2.261 Aa) and As-As (2.527 Aa) bond lengths match closely the values commonly observed in molecule-based structures of other arsenic sulphides. On exposure of the crystal to filtered polychromatic light, the change in cell parameters seem to indicate that the As (sub 4) S (sub 4) molecules are readily affected by light whereas the As (sub 4) S (sub 5) molecules are not.
