Abstract

Pellouxite, the second natural oxy-chloro-sulphosalt after pillaite, occurs in cavities in calcite veins in the small Fe-Ba deposit of Buca della Vena mine in the Apuan Alps; it is associated with many other Pb-Sb acicular sulphosalts and with tetrahedrite, bournonite, sphalerite, cinnabar, galena, andorite, chalcostibite and gersdorffite. It forms black acicular flattened crystals with metallic lustre, up to 1 mm long and < 0.05 mm thick; D (sub calc) 5.97 g/cm (super 3) ; reflectance approximately 37 (air), 21 %(oil). EPMA gave Pb 47.17, Sb 31.16, Cu 0.89, Ag 0.59, S 19.08, Cl 0.33, O 0.39, = 99.60, leading to the idealized formula (Cu,Ag) (sub 2) Pb (sub 21) Sb (sub 23) S (sub 55) ClO. Indexed XRD powder data are tabulated; strongest lines 3.423(100), 4.002(38), 3.562(31), 2.948(27), 3.009(25) Aa; a 55.824, b 4.0892, c 24.128 Aa, beta 113.14 degrees , V 5065 Aa (super 3) , Z = 4, space group C2/m. Pellouxite belongs to the zinkenite group of lead sulphosalts with cyclically twinned structure and is structurally related to scainiite. As is the case of pillaite, its formation is the result of a complex sulphide deposition from hydrothermal brines at relatively high temperatures and fO (sub 2) /fS (sub 2) conditions controlled by the pyrite-hematite-magnetite buffer. The name honours the late Prof. Alberto Pelloux (1868-1947) of the University of Genova.
