Abstract
This book (Memoir No. 27) reviews our understanding of pyroclastic density currents and presents a new conceptual framework for investigating how ignimbrites are deposited. The results of field-based studies, laboratory experiments and numerical modelling, including work on clastic sedimentology and industrial particle transport, are integrated. The new approach focuses on processes and conditions within the lower flow-boundary zone of currents. These concepts are explained in diagrams and the 95 photographs provide an explanatory atlas of deposit types. There is a 4-page list of definitions of terms used, together with over 350 references and a detailed index.
