Metamorphism of coal
Economic Geology and the Bulletin of the Society of Economic Geologists (May 1951) 46 (3): 252-266

Abstract

"Coal is considered as a polydispersed polymeric colloidal system. It is envisaged that the degree of polymerization is enhanced by continued earth pressures. The compaction of the coal-gel leads to dehydration, which is followed by synaeresis of the gel, the larger and more complex polymeric units coagulate, expelling the smaller and more mobile units, thus giving rise to the banded structure in coals."
