Abstract

A granulite from the Sondalo femic complex contains prismatine, the B-rich member of the kornerupine group. The plagioclase-cordierite-sillimanite-rutile-hercynite-corundum-quartz granulite is interpreted as a restite formed after partial melting of amphibolite-facies tourmaline-bearing metasediments at approximately 900 degrees C and 0.8 GPa. The prismatine grains form a coarse aggregate with tourmaline, biotite and albitic plagioclase and contain inclusions of sapphirine, hercynite and corundum. SIMS on the prismatine gave B (sub 2) O (sub 3) 2.30-2.89, Li (sub 2) O 0.067-0.125, BeO 0.005-0.007, F 0.32-0.49, H (sub 2) O 0.90-1.02 wt.%. A mechanism of prismatine formation is suggested involving the breakdown of tourmaline during anatexis of the amphibolite-facies metasediments and the development of prismatine as a refractory phase.
