Abstract

Amphiboles along the tremolite-pargasite join have been hydrothermally synthesized at 900 degrees C, 3 kbar. Under these conditions, there is complete solid solution between tremolite and pargasite and the variation in cell parameters is linear as a function of composition. The IR spectra of the principal OH-stretching region are consistent with predictions on local bond-valence grounds, and show short-range order or cations at the octahedral sites and strong coupling between Al at T(1) and Na at A.
