Abstract

Odontolite or bone turquoise, a turquoise-blue heated fossilized mastodon ivory or bone, is an imitation of natural gem turquoise. Its colour can be ascribed to Mn (super 5+) traces (Mn 220-650 ppm) in a tetrahedral environment of four O atoms in an apatite matrix. The structural environment of the Mn was investigated by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) which confirmed the presence of Mn (super 2+) , Mn (super 3+) or Mn (super 4+) before, and Mn (super 5+) after thermal treatment of fossilized ivory. The location of Mn (super 5+) partially substituting for P in the apatite structure was confirmed.
