Abstract

The anisotropic OH-stretching vibrational behaviour of three birefringent uvarovite-grossular crystals from Saranov, Ural Mts, Russia, were studied by polarized IR spectroscopy; these garnets have low water contents (< 0.5 wt.%). Their IR polarization behaviour in the OH stretching regions complies with orthorhombic, monoclinic and triclinic symmetry, respectively. The corresponding spectra consist of 14 partly superimposing absorption bands between 3680 and 3470 cm (super -1) , which are assigned to structurally incorporated hydroxyl groups: there are four band doublets and two single bands. For the four band doublets at 3559/3572, 3572/3565 and 3595/3588 cm (super -1) and for the single 3618 cm (super -1) band, models for structural OH incorporation based on the classical (O (sub 4) H (sub 4) ) hydrogarnet substitution are proposed; in contrast, for the doublet at 3652/3602 cm (super -1) and the single band at 3640 cm (super -1) , OH defect incorporation is explained via vacancies on octahedral or dodecahedral cation positions, leading to [SiO (sub 3) (OH)] tetrahedral groups.
