Abstract

Oswaldpeetersite occurs on bedding planes in a layer of siltstone within the Triassic Shinarump conglomerate, associated with gypsum, cuprite, antlerite, goethite, lepidocrocite, mbobomkulite, hydrombobomkulite, sklodowskite and two unidentified U minerals. It forms tiny canary-yellow prismatic crystals (0.1 X 0.01 X 0.002 mm) with a vitreous lustre; H. 2-3, D > 4.10 g/cm (super 3) ; a 1.583, beta 1.669, gamma 1.712, 2V (sub alpha ) 67.4 degrees ; orientation gamma = a and elongation positive; weak pleochroism with alpha and beta very pale yellow to colourless, gamma pale yellow. EPMA and TG gave UO (sub 3) 81.47, H (sub 2) O 12.30, CO (sub 2) (calc) 6.23, = 100.00, leading to the idealized formula (UO (sub 2) ) (sub 2) CO (sub 3) (OH) (sub 2) .4H (sub 2) O. Indexed XRD powder data are tabulated; strongest lines 3.32(100), 4.55(96), 3.029(85), 8.95(65), 7.54(63) Aa; a 4.1425, b 14.098, c 18.374 Aa, beta 103.62 degrees , V 1042.8 Aa (super 3) ; Z = 4, space group P2 (sub 1) /c. The name is for the structural crystallographer M.O. Peeters, University of Leuven, Belgium.
