Abstract

A suite of Cretaceous dykes from northernmost Greenland that form part of an extensive dyke swarm have been dated ( (super 40) Ar/ (super 39) Ar) at approximately 80-85 m.y. and analysed for their major and trace elements. These ages suggest a possible relationship between dyke emplacement and ocean-floor spreading off N Greenland. The dykes show both tholeiitic and alkali basaltic affinity, but are spatially and temporally affiliated, they have chemical affinities with OIB, were generated at depths < or = 60-80 km and may owe their origin in part to a mantle plume that relates to the development of the Makorov Basin. EPMA results are given for olivine, pyroxene, plagioclase and biotite.
