The essential features of inelastic neutron scattering are reviewed and the application of the technique to forsterite, fayalite, enstatite, the garnets pyrope, almandine, grossular and spessartine, MgSiO (sub 3) perovskite, the Al (sub 2) SiO (sub 5) minerals, vemiculite, muscovite, the SiO (sub 2) polymorphs, zircon, the oxides MgO, FeO and Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) , calcite and rhodochrosite are outlined. Theoretical studies of structurally more complex minerals have largely employed an atomistic approach involving semi-empirical interatomic potentials.
