Abstract

After treatment of biotite, muscovite and vermiculite in HCl and H (sub 2) SO (sub 4) at pH ranging between 7 and 1, the solid residues were studied using Moessbauer spectroscopy at room T. The spectra of the untreated samples were fitted assuming quadrupole splitting distribution and different fitting models with various combinations of Gaussian components for the Fe sites. The models were then used to fit the experimental products. All three minerals were oxidized during weathering and the correlation between oxidation ratio and pH is modelled using a Weibull function. The rate of oxidation of biotite is higher than that in muscovite and vermiculite.
