Abstract

A suite of Mn-silicate-carbonate rocks in the Eastern Ghats, which was metamorphosed under ultrahigh T, shows contrasting mineral assemblages in closely spaced domains. The development of these contrasting assemblages under isothermal-isobaric conditions is attributed to initial variations in fluid composition, particularly aCO (sub 2) , and bulk-rock Mn:Mg:Al:Si:Ca ratios. The fO (sub 2) was buffered near the QFM buffer during peak metamorphism. Garnet shows a sharp increase in Fe (super 3+) content towards the rim, which is interpreted to result from increased aCO (sub 2) during the later stages of evolution of these rocks due to channelled fluid flux. At the end stage of evolution, the rocks suffered hydration at lower T.
