Abstract

Vaeyrynenite, (Mn (super 2+) (sub 0.78) Fe (super 2+) (sub 0.23) Mg (sub 0.01) )Be(PO (sub 4) )(OH (sub 0.92) F (sub 0.08) ), is monoclinic, a 5.4044, b 14.5145, c 4.7052 Aa, beta 102.798 degrees , V 359.91 Aa (super 3) , space group P2 (sub 1) /a, Z = 4. The structure was refined to R 1.5%, and has Bephi (sub 4) tetrahedra connected to adjacent Bephi (sub 4) tetrahedra by corner-sharing of anions in a zigzag pattern to form a chain extending in the a direction. This chain is decorated along its periphery by PO (sub 4) tetrahedra that corner-share with one O atom from each of two different Bephi (sub 4) tetrahedra to form ribbons along the c axis. These [Be (sub 2) (OH) (sub 2) (PO (sub 4) ) (sub 2) ] (super 4n-) (sub n) ribbons are linked in the b direction by (Mn (super 2+) ,Fe (super 2+) ) in octahedra coordination. The resultant (001) sheets are linked to adjacent sheets in the c direction by corner-sharing O atoms between PO (sub 4) tetrahedra and [(Mn,Fe) (sub phi 6) ] octahedra and by hydrogen bonds.
