Abstract

A suite of Ni minerals (gaspeite, retgersite, nickelhexahydrite) occurs in veins of altered ultramafic rocks from Dubostica. Cell parameter data are: gaspeite a 4.648, c 14.95 Aa (rhombohedral cell a 5.660 Aa, alpha 48.49 degrees ), V 279.7 Aa (super 3) ; retgersite a 6.787m c 18.27 Aa, V 842 Aa (super 3) ; nickelhexahydrite a 9.925, b 7.232, c 24.16 Aa, beta 98.55 degrees , V 1715 Aa (super 3) . ICP-AES analysis of the gaspeite gave NiO 49.63, MgO 0.17, CaO 0.45, FeO 6.36, MnO 0.008, CO (sub 2) 43.25, = 99.87, giving the empirical formula (Ni (sub 0.73) Fe (sub 0.10) Ca (sub 0.01) )C (sub 1.08) O (sub 3) . This association formed as a result of reactions involving a series of kinetically controlled transitory equilibria, and is characteristic of near-surface hydrothermal alteration.
