Abstract

The lead isotope data for fragments of lead coffins found in late Roman cemeteries in the Rhineland generally cluster in a very narrow range. The values coincide with data for post-Variscan galenas from the Eifel area, indicating a probable provenance. It is speculated that at least part of the metallic lead of the coffins is a by-product of late-Roman silver production from the Eifel galena.
