Abstract

In the Caverns of Sonora, Texas, metatyuyamunite occurs in association with celestine, opal and several minor crystalline phases. The uranyl vanadate metatyuyamunite is found as aggregates of sub-millimetre plate-like crystals often covered by botryoidal opal coatings. The metatyuyamunite has a 10.418, b 8.508, c 17.173 Aa. Opal and celstine formed either directly over the yellow crust or along the cracks that cross the limy mud on which metatyuyamunite was precipitated. The secondary uranium vanadate minerals were precipitated in the final stages of cave development.
