Abstract

The crystal structure and chemical composition of two crystals (ET1 and ET2) of strontian soda melilite from Mt Etinde have been determined, leading to the formulae (Ca (sub 0.84) Sr (sub 0.45) Na (sub 0.71) ) (Mg (sub 0.19) Fe (super 2+) (sub 0.06) Mn (sub 0.03) Zn (sub 0.02) Al (sub 0.46) Fe (super 3+) (sub 0.23) Ti (sub 0.01) )(Si (sub 1.99) Al (sub 0.01) )O (sub 7.00) and (Ca (sub 0.83) Sr (sub 0.45) Na (sub 0.72) )(Mg (sub 0.20) Fe (super 2+) (sub 0.06) Mn (sub 0.03) Zn (sub 0.01) Al (sub 0.45) Fe (super 3+) (sub 0.24) Ti (sub 0.02) ) (Si (sub 1.99) Al (sub 0.01) )O (sub 7.00) for ET1 and ET2, respectively. Cell parameters (ET1) a 7.754, c 5.101 Aa and (ET2) a 7.764, c 5.095 Aa. The structures were refined to R 2.64 and 2.78%, respectively. The substitution of Sr for Ca causes sufficient modification of the tetrahedral layer to destabilize the incommensurate modulated structure.
