Abstract

Discusses two phases of development in glaciology, an early phase characterized by observation and speculation and a later one, ending in the late 1930's, characterized by specialization, in which glaciology was classified as a geological science and emphasis was placed on glacial geology. Recent activity of glaciologists in Britain, Sweden, and Switzerland is noted.
