Abstract

Melting experiments on fluorphlogopite + plagioclase (An (sub 68) ) assemblages demonstrate the existence of a critical T of melting (T (sub crit) ), interpreted in terms of the phase relations of the starting assemblage and the possibility or impossibility for a single (cotectic) melt to coexist with both the mica and the plagioclase. At T both below and above T (sub crit) , the plagioclase reacts by a dissolution/reprecipitation mechanism rather than by diffusion of NaSi-CaAl components in the plagioclase structure. Therefore the newly formed plagioclase grows directly in equilibrium with its surrounding melt; it does, however, show different morphologies in the two T domains, indicative of different degrees of initial disequilibrium. Above T (sub crit) , the rate-controlling process for melting is chemical diffusion in the melt, whereas below T (sub crit) the rate-limiting step is the formation of metastable undercooled melt.
