Abstract

Pyrope single-crystals (< or = 2 mm) doped with Co, Cr, Ni, Ti and V were synthesized at 950-1050 degrees C and 25 kbar and the structural positions and oxidation states of the transition metals determined by EPMA and optical absorption spectroscopy. Cr (super 3+) occupies the octahedral site and Co (super 2+) and Ni (super 2+) the dodecahedral site; only Ti (super 4+) and no measurable Ti (super 3+) could be stabilized on the octahedral site. The optical absorption spectra of V-bearing garnets indicated V (super 3+) on the octahedral site, with V (super 4+) on octahedral and tetrahedral sites. IR spectra in the OH-stretching region between 4000 and 3000 cm (super -1) are similar to those normally shown by end-member pyrope. At room T, the spectra show a single band at approximately 3630 cm (super -1) which splits at approximately 79 K into two bands assigned to OH-stretching modes resulting from the hydrogarnet substitution; both the higher charged cations (Ti (super 4+) and V (super 4+) ) appear to cause additional OH (super -) substitutions in garnet.
