Abstract

Two specimens from the Belgian Congo close to the cobalt and nickel end-members of the pyrite group have been made available for study. One was obtained in Katanga at the Kasompi mine and on chemical analysis has been shown to be close to NiS (sub 2) . The other specimen was found in the Shinkolobwe mine near Jadotville in Katanga and has a composition close to CoS (sub 2) . The lattice constants of the cobalt mineral, cattierite, and of the nickel mineral, vaesite, are recorded in comparison with pyrite.
