Abstract

Veins of quartz + fibrous tourmaline cut monzonitic and syenitic rocks in this mineralized area. The acicular and hair-like grey crystals of foitite have a mean composition of [] (sub 0.43) Na (sub 0.52) Ca (sub 0.07) (Fe (sub 1.55) Mn (sub 0.08) Mg (sub 0.52) Al (sub 0.67) Ti (sub 0.01) )Al (sub 6) (BO (sub 3) ) (sub 3) Si (sub 6) O (sub 18) (OH,O) (sub 3) (OH). The crystals of this low-T tourmaline radiate from irregular patches of schorl in cavities in quartz veins. Each fibre is zoned along its length with respect to Fe, Mn, Mg, Ca, Na, K and (P). This fibrous foitite contains higher Mg, Ca and Na contents than those from California and Elba.
