Abstract

Goldichite was found in the Santa Barbara sulphur mine, in Jujuy province, formed by present-day activity of thermal springs; it occurs associated with metavoltine, hexahydrite, alunogen, sideronatrite, ferrinatrite, voltaite, krausite, halotrichite, gypsum and halite. The goldichite forms euhedral flattened crystals 0.3 mm in length, tabular on 100, and has a 10.397, b 10.461, c 9.109, beta 100.00 degrees , V 972.8 Aa (super 3) . The crystals are transparent, with a greenish hue in natural light but have a pale pink tint in artificial light; H. 2-3; 100 cleavage excellent; alpha 1.584, beta 1.602, Gamma 1.634, 2V<F128MV>g<F255D> 75 degrees , with pleochroism alpha colourless, beta = Gamma very pale yellow; alpha = b, beta = a, Gamma :c 9 degrees , v >><$I> r, strong. EPMA gave P (sub 2) O (sub 5) 0.80-1.02, SO (sub 3) 52.39-57.19, TiO (sub 2) 0.13-0.27, Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) 0.02-0.16, CaO 0.01-0.05, Fe (sub 2) O (sub 3) 28.57-30.26, Na (sub 2) O 0.29-0.46, K (sub 2) O 8.81-9.82, corresponding with the ideal formula KFe(SO (sub 4) ) (sub 24H) (sub 2) O.
