New data for metamorphic vermiculite

A detailed optical, XRD, DTA-TG, EPMA and TEM/AEM study is reported for vermiculite-like minerals from a very low-grade metamorphic sequence in the Malaguide complex, Betic Cordillera, Spain. These minerals occur as transformation products of chlorite, the conversion sequence being chlorite --> chlorite/vermiculite mixed-layers --> vermiculite. This sequence is characterized by a continuous chemical evolution that includes (Fe + Mg) loss and increase in the Si/Al ratio, these changes being accompanied by a variable increase in alkalis and Ca. EM data for homogeneous packets allow the chemical characterization of high-T or metamorphic vermiculite, which shows a narrow compositional range. This mineral sequence probably developed during the Alpine metamorphic event at < 400 degrees C, and the phases formed may be considered as in the chlorite to biotite transformation, their development probably being dependent on both T and cation availability.
