Abstract

A large pink-red coloured, 6 cm fragment of a tourmaline crystal from the Lacamisinten gem deposit in the Fianarantsoa district, central Madagascar, has been investigated extensively by various techniques and found to have a homogeneous composition in the liddicoatite-elbaite solid solution, with a high Mn content. The average of 100 analyses gave SiO (sub 2) 37.22, TiO (sub 2) 0.07, B (sub 2) O (sub 3) 10.93, Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) 38.03, FeO 0.10, MnO 4.06, MgO 0.18, Li (sub 2) O 1.86, CaO 2.63, Na (sub 2) O 1.40, K (sub 2) O 0.02, F 0.64, H (sub 2) O 3.17, less O = F 0.27, = 100.04. A structure refinement was carried out to R 0.025; a 15.880-15.882, c 7.115-7.118 Aa. It is suggested that this sample, or part of it could be a good reference material for tourmalines of the liddicoatite-(Mn-bearing) elbaite solid solution.
