Abstract

Liddicoatite, locally with cores of highly X-vacant elbaite, occurs in the High Grade Dike pegmatite of the Cat Lake-Winnipeg River pegmatite field, in the SW margin of the Canadian Shield. The liddicoatite contains substantial proportions of the elbaite and rossmanite components; the most calcic composition corresponds with (Ca (sub 0.498) Na (sub 0.393) [] (sub 0.017) ) (Li (sub 1.396) Al (sub 1.122) Mn (sub 0.414) Fe (sub 0.065) )Al (sub 6) (Si (sub 5.888) Al (sub 0.112) )O (sub 30) (OH (sub 3.516) F (sub 0.484) ). The liddicoatite is associated with a Ca-bearing spessartine (Sps (sub 89) Gro (sub 9) Alm (sub 2) ) containing F < or = 0.30 wt.% with pollucite containing detectable Ca (CaO 0.26-0.44 wt.%). This mineral assemblage was the final product of primary, near-solidus crystallization in this pegmatite; its Ca-enriched members have no analogues in other Li-tourmaline-bearing pegmatites. Neither mobilization of Ca from pre-existing pegmatite minerals, nor an influx of Ca from the host rocks seems likely. Some Ca may have been preserved throughout the crystallization of the apatite- and microlite-poor pegmatite but specific details remain to be established.
