Abstract

Two distinct granulite-facies metamorphic events, one at approximately 650 and the other at 550-560 m.y., are identified in the Kaoko belt of N Namibia. The later metamorphism overprinted the Kaoko with increasing P-T conditions from greenschist facies in the E to granulite facies in the W. Geochronological and petrological constraints demonstrate a rapid tectonothermal evolution during the 550-560 m.y. event, possibly resulting from lithospheric delamination. The significance of the earlier granulite-facies event at 650 m.y. is unclear. Due to their high-grade metamorphism and similar deformation features, these two suites can only be distinguished by isotope studies.
