X-ray diffraction characteristics of calcic plagioclase from eucrites as well as lunar highland and Archean anorthosites

Abstract

The X-ray intensity distributions of diffuse c reflections were investigated in calcic plagioclase from meteoritic, lunar and terrestrial anorthosites, representing various stages of crustal evolution in the early solar system. The profiles of the c reflections were measured along directions and ^ the diffuse streak, and the corresponding domain sizes were calculated from their full width at half maximum values. Lunar highland anorthite (BVL-105) shows the largest c domain size, indicating the slowest cooling rate; anorthite from the Moore County eucritic meteorite shows a very small domain size in spite of the plutonic texture, perhaps indicating reheating after the cumulate formation process.
